SWIMATHON HISTORY
Swimathon started in 1986 as an initiative to increase swimmer numbers in local authority pools and since then it has grown into the world’s largest fundraising pool based swimming event. bringing together hundreds of communities to promote the benefits of swimming and to raise vital funds for many national charities. More than 750,000 swimmers have taken part in Swimathon raising over £55 million for charity. The national charities benefitting from these funds over the years include Macmillian Cancer Support, NSPCC, The British Heart Foundation, The Prince’s Trust, Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Having weathered the very considerable impact of Covid, Swimathon and Marathon Swims have been revitalised with strong growth in participant numbers and fundraising. Swimathon Foundation is now turning its attention to the re-establishment of Schools Swimathon and Open Water Swimathon as active campaigns.
Marathon Swims joined the Swimathon family of campaigns in late 2019. Marathon Swims is an annual event taking place at the London Aquatics Centre, aimed in particular at the ultra-distance swimmer. You can find out more at Marathon Swims.
