MEET THE FOUNDATION

Swimathon Foundation is managed by a board of Trustees, who bring with them a wealth of experience and professional competence, as well as a genuine passion for swimming and charitable fundraising.

PHILIP STINSON - CHAIR

Philip is a Partner in Clintons, the leading media and entertainment law firm. Philip is well known for his work in Sport and in the Creative Industries, areas in which he has been advising talented clients for over 30 years. Philip has particular expertise in dealing with the legal and practical issues arising where charitable fundraising combines with advertising and marketing activity, particularly in relation to mass participation events. As well as maintaining a busy legal practice, Philip is the Chair of the Trustees of Swimathon Foundation and is a member of the Panel of Judges appointed by the European Athletics Association Court. Philip is a graduate of Worcester College, Oxford and – when he can find the time - is a keen recreational swimmer.


DONNA NOTARO

Donna is a chartered accountant with over 30 years’ experience in commercial finance. She has experience of the voluntary and community sector including the post of treasurer and president for Beckenham Swimming Club, as well as supporting set up of the Crystal Palace Club Network. Donna is an active sportswoman including swimming three times a week and is a J1 swimming official, in addition her three children and husband have all been competitive swimmers.


DEANA RADICE

Deana has been a Human Resources professional for more than 20 years and has been a qualified swimming teacher for over 15 years. She has combined working in the commercial sector with teaching thousands of children and adults to learn to swim. She is passionate about swimming having experienced considerable success throughout her teenage years representing both her county and her country locally and internationally. Deana understands the impact that swimming can have on everyone’s life. As a life skill, contributing to both fitness and as a source of pleasure!


RALPH RILEY

Ralph has over 40 years’ experience managing sports and recreation services, including over 20 years as the Chief Executive of the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM) at Loughborough University, which has given him a deep understanding of the impact sport can have on a community. He is active in the sporting world and is currently a member and advisor to a number of swimming and sports bodies. As an author, editor and speaker, he has contributed to hundreds of sporting reports, publications and conferences. Ralph remains an active sportsman, with a particular passion for hill walking, fitness and swimming.


GRANT PEARCE

Grant is an industry award winning and professionally accredited IT Consultant with more than 25 years’ experience of strategy, large change delivery and organisation transformation - primarily in financial services. He has always been a dedicated waterman from junior international to masters competitive swimming, swim teaching and squad coaching in the UK and US, a volunteer coxswain of RNLI lifeboats, competitive surf lifesaving and as a diehard recreational windsurfer. Grant is a physics graduate of Southampton University and of the United World College of the Atlantic.


MATTHEW LEOPOLD

Matthew is a senior marketer for B2B and B2C blue chip corporates.  He is currently the Head of Brand and Communications at LexisNexis, the global legal intelligence and technology company.  Previously, Matthew led sponsorship at British Gas during their sponsorship of British Swimming.  He delivered campaigns that encouraged swimming participation at all levels - from paddling pool to podium.  Outside of work Matthew is a senior volunteer emergency ambulance crew with the London Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance - responding to 999 calls in the community.  He is also is a board member of the European Sponsorship Association, helping to raise the standard of brand sponsorship as a marketing channel.


DUNCAN GOODHEW MBE, SWIMATHON PRESIDENT

Duncan Goodhew is a champion swimmer and British sporting hero. He won an Olympic Gold medal for the 100m breaststroke at the 1980 Moscow games, where he also won a bronze relay medal. Since then, Duncan has been focused on helping more people to take up swimming. Following his fantastic swimming career, Duncan has found success as a motivational speaker, speaking about how to deal with goal setting and stay motivated. Duncan was heavily involved in promoting the 2012 London Olympics, which were a huge success for his home city. He continues to be a great ambassador for swimming, sport and general fitness.


GRAHAM BATTERHAM, ADVISOR TO THE TRUSTEES

Graham has a wealth of experience in sports participation. He started his career at The Sports Council, now Sport England, before establishing an innovative non-profit body owned by the London Boroughs to manage the world’s largest multi-sports programme for children, the London Youth Games, which he was involved with for over 20 years. It was also Graham who in 1988 saw the potential of the fledgling Swimathon event and created the first fundraiser with Olympian Duncan Goodhew in London. He has been instrumental in steering Swimathon to the successful national event it is today.
