SWIMMING CLUB IN BLACKBURN RECEIVES VITAL FUNDING FROM THE SWIMATHON FOUNDATION

A swimming club in Blackburn will benefit from the Swimathon Foundation’s Covid-19 Relief Fund.

Great Harwood Otter Amateur Swimming Club applied for the grant, announced last month, to help with pool hire costs and trophies for future galas.

The Lancashire-based club has 80 members and several long-standing volunteers involved in coaching, fundraising and administrative support. The club’s finances have been impacted, with their pool shut since 13 March and as such they made the decision to greatly reduce membership fees for the time being.

Joyce Miller from Great Harwood Otter Amateur Swimming Club said:

“Obviously we’ve had to reduce our fees due to the Coronavirus because there are no trainings, so our bank balance has diminished drastically. When we do go back, we will have to raise some funds to get the bank balance a bit higher because we have £2000 pool hire every month which we have to cover. But until we start gaining momentum and getting the fees back to normal this fund will help.

“I was given the opportunity to apply for this grant and you don’t get nothing if you don’t ask. It’s a small self-sufficient club with 80 members and it’s just for the town to keep the children healthy. It’s more like a social club and we are always open for new swimmers when we open again.”
