The Swimathon Foundation COVID-19 Relief Fund

As the UK continues to deal with coronavirus, the Swimathon Foundation is aware that the swimming and aquatics community is still facing a very difficult time with another full closure of swimming facilities across the UK. Back in May 2020, The Swimathon Foundation’s COVID-19 Relief Fund (the “Fund”) was established to offer grant funding for small organisations working in the swimming and aquatic community in the UK.

Through grants made from the Fund, it supported existing small swimming and aquatics organisations so that they could continue to operate in these especially difficult times. In June 2020, £50,000 was granted to such organisations across the UK. The Swimathon Foundation wants to continue to support these organisations and has worked closely once again with Swim England, Swim Wales and Scottish Swimming in establishing a set of criteria for a second Fund, at a time when it is more important than ever to support the swimming community. See the criteria here.

What will the Swimathon Foundation fund?

The Fund has been established to help small swimming and aquatics organisations meet their obligations during this difficult period. These could be fixed costs or loss of revenue and might include, for example:

  • Swim coaching costs
  • Transport charge
  • Pool space hire cost
  • Event entry fee
  • Event hosting fees
  • Club kit subsidies
  • Insurance premiums

Applications will only be considered if they relate specifically to the financial impact on the applicable organisation of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic during the period from 01 November 2020 to 31 March 2021.

By way of a more detailed example, the Fund might support a swimming or aquatics club which has had to pay for equipment or pool hire to run an organised session which has now been cancelled as a result of the new UK Government coronavirus guidelines that are in place.

How much will the Swimathon Foundation fund?

Organisations can apply for grants of a minimum amount of £250 and up to a maximum amount of £1,000. Given the continued scale of the current crisis, the Foundation is likely to receive more applications than it will be able to fund. An organisation can only apply once for the award of a grant from the Fund (2020 applicants may reapply in 2021) and that application should be duly authorised by the organisation concerned.
