Essex swimmer raises £5,000 for charity

Julie green has raised £5000 for marie curie and cancer research uk through swimathon 2020A teacher from Felsted has raised £5,000 for Mare Curie and Cancer Research UK having completed this year’s Swimathon challenge.

Motivated to fundraise for cancer charities Marie Curie and Cancer Research UK, Essex local Julie Green, and her daughter Emily, decided to take part in a swimming challenge.

The original 2020 Swimathon was postponed in March and became a virtual event with over 18,000 swimmers across the UK taking part. Julie Green said: “I have always loved swimming and started going to the pool three times a week last September to get fitter. Cancer has affected my family, so I decided to use Swimathon as a fitness goal, as well as a way to raise money for two very important charities.

“I was devastated when pools shut and that the money I’d started raising may not reach the charities, so when I found out I could complete my Swimathon independently, I was absolutely determined to do so. I had originally signed up to swim 5k but decided to challenge myself to swim the distance across the English Channel virtually and I managed 33km over 4 weeks! It was great to get back into a pool after so long and swimming for me is my way to relax. Friends and family supported me very generously for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie.”

Despite restrictions linked to the pandemic, £1million has been raised in total this year for Swimathon charities, Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie.

Swimathon President and Olympic medallist, Duncan Goodhew, said:

“It’s been an immensely challenging year for us all in Britain, so I’m really pleased to most heartily thank people like Julie and Emily who are continuing with Swimathon to ensure really worthy charities have the necessary funding to continue supporting the people who are so critically in need.”

“The role of the Swimathon Foundation has always been to support swimming communities, protect aquatic facilities and help charities, who have all been really challenged by the pandemic. Thanks to our fantastic swimming community we have been particularly successful this year and with their support we are absolutely determined to continue to be a ‘force for good’ into the future.

“Thank you and well done to Julie, Emily and all of our swimmers in Essex from myself, the Swimathon team, Marie Curie and Cancer Research UK. You are all swimming heroes!”
