The biggest thing when you’re just getting used to open water is to not rush and not go too far out of your depth quickly. Wherever you’re swimming, in a lake, in a river or in the sea you can always swim close to the shore rather than going out in a straight line. You may find yourself receiving questioning responses and raised eyebrows, as I did. You are never "too old" to learn to swim, swimming lessons are not the preserve of children. Supportive friends and family will prove invaluable on your journey.
The 2018 Swimathon Foundation Community Grants Scheme opened on Friday 2 February and is inviting applications from groups and individuals who aim to provide and promote swimming in their local community.
