NOTTINGHAM SWIMMING CLUB AWARDED FUNDING BY THE SWIMATHON FOUNDATION
A swimming club in Nottingham is to receive vital support from the Swimathon Foundation.
Nova Centurion Swimming Club applied for the grant as part of Swimathon Foundation’s Covid-19 Relief Fund.
As well as being the former club of Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington, Nova Centurion is also the competitive outlet of the Nottinghamshire County Swim Squad and has two main sites, in Nottingham and Mansfield. Nova Centurion has become one of the most successful squads in the country, having won the Great Britain Club Team Championships and been regarded as Top Team on numerous occasions.
Due to the outbreak of coronavirus, the club had to cancel their Open Meet which was due to take place 28-29 March. The profits made from regular competitions allow membership fees to be largely subsidised so without additional funding, the club may have to raise their prices to stay afloat.
Nathan Hilton, Director of Coaching at Nova Centurion Swimming Club said:
“In terms of receiving the funding from Swimathon is a big bonus for us. At the minute times are tight, we are going to have to put a number of things in place outside of any grants or funding with us not able to run competitions for the rest of the year is a sizable chunk out of our budget that we run on every year. It’s going to put us in a difficult position but hopefully we’ve got some plans in place which will see us through to the back end of the year. Getting back up and running is only one aspect of it because we have got to be financially viable moving forward.
“Myself and the majority of the coaching staff have been furloughed and unable to work but what we have done is sending out information for swimmers and parents over email and social media every day. So, we’ve been able to maintain a service to our customers, and whilst it’s not our normal service it is a service and hopefully, we have been able to maintain some engagement with some of the members within the club.
“Hopefully sometime in the not too distant future we can return to the pool and get ourselves back up and running.”
